Cattle and Wheat Farming Still Matter in Wichita County

Wichita County has hundreds of farms and ranches, with stocker cattle, cows, calves, wheat, and small grains as the main products.

The county has a long ranching tradition. Early cattle ranches dominated after 1870. By the early 2000s, the county had about 606 farms covering over 300,000 acres. Stocker cattle and cow-calf operations are the main livestock products. Wheat and other small grains are the main crops.

Texas right-to-farm law protects agricultural operations from nuisance lawsuits by new neighbors who move near existing farms. If you are buying land near an active farm or feedlot, the farm may be legally protected from complaints about noise, dust, or odors as long as it follows standard practices. Check statutes.capitol.texas.gov for the current text of the Texas Agriculture Code, Chapter 251.
