Wildfire Can Move Fast on the Flat Plains
Dry conditions and strong West Texas winds make wildfires a serious risk in and around Lubbock County, especially for rural and edge-of-town properties.
The High Plains is dry and windy. Fires that start in grass or brush can spread across flat terrain very quickly. Dry years with strong winds create especially dangerous conditions, and fires have reached residential areas.
The NWS Lubbock office issues fire weather briefings when conditions are dangerous. If you live outside city limits, check with Lubbock County and your fire district about outdoor burn rules — burn bans are issued regularly during dry periods. They can change quickly, so check the current county burn ban status before burning debris.
