Wildfire Risk in Travis County: Homes Near the Wildland Edge

More than half of Austin falls inside a wildland-urban interface zone where fire risk is high and building rules are stricter.

Travis County sits in a region where dry vegetation, drought, and development mix. The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is where homes and wildland fuels are close together. Over half of Austin falls inside one of three WUI Code zones. Each zone has different rules for how your home and property must be built or maintained to reduce fire risk.

About 90% of wildfires are caused by human activity — not lightning. Travis County tracks burn bans for unincorporated areas. During a ban, you cannot burn yard waste like limbs and leaves. You can check current burn ban status at traviscountytx.gov/fire-marshal or call (512) 854-4621.
