Wildfire
Wildfire risk is real in Bexar County's wildland-urban interface
As San Antonio has grown into surrounding brushland, more homes in Bexar County sit in areas where wildfire poses a serious threat, especially during dry summers.
Fast growth in northwest and south Bexar County has pushed new subdivisions into the wildland-urban interface—the zone where developed land meets dry grass or brush. This is where wildfire risk is highest. Texas A&M Forest Service built the Texas Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (TxWRAP) to help communities spot and plan for this risk.
In recent years, Bexar County has seen notable grass and brush fires. The county's Emergency Service Districts have set up wildland fire strike teams and adopted community protection plans. Bexar County also issues burn bans often during dry periods to lower the chance of fire.
If you live in or are buying in a newer subdivision near the edges of San Antonio, check if the property is in a high-risk wildland-urban interface area. Use the Texas Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal at texaswildfirerisk.com to check your area. Sign up for emergency alerts through bexar.org or the ReadySouthTexas app so you get evacuation notices quickly.
