Landowners Can Shift From Ag to Wildlife Management Use

Land that already qualifies for ag appraisal can switch to wildlife management use, keeping the low tax rate while supporting native species.

To switch to wildlife management use, your land must already get the ag open-space tax break. That tax break is called the 1-d-1 rule. Once it does, you must actively do at least three of seven set wildlife activities. Examples are habitat control, predator management, putting out water for wildlife, and counting animals.

McLennan Central Appraisal District (MCAD) has its own wildlife management policy. You can download it at mclennancad.org. It tells you what the local rules require. The deadline to apply is usually April 30. If approved, your land keeps the lower ag tax rate. If you stop doing the required activities, rollback taxes may apply.
