Wildlife watching and the Brazos Valley Loop trail
The TPWD Brazos Valley Wildlife Trail connects viewing sites across the area, and Lick Creek Park in College Station offers 515 acres of Post Oak Savannah habitat for hiking, biking, and birding.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department designates the Brazos Valley Loop as part of the statewide Great Texas Wildlife Trails system, routing birders and nature watchers through sites in and around Brazos County. The Post Oak Savannah ecoregion supports a range of woodland and grassland species.
Lick Creek Park at 13600 Rock Prairie Rd., College Station, provides 523 acres of Post Oak Savannah habitat with five miles of marked trails open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians. The Gary Halter Nature Center includes a native plant display, an amphitheater, and a monarch butterfly garden. Birdwatching is especially rewarding during migration seasons.
For a fishing complement to wildlife watching, Lake Bryan (five miles west of Bryan on FM 1687) offers public bank and boat access. TPWD's Neighborhood Fishin' program also stocks catfish and trout at urban fishing sites near College Station. Check tpwd.texas.gov for current stocking schedules and access details.
