Ag Valuation
Agricultural Land in Galveston County May Qualify for a Special Tax Rate
Land used for farming, ranching, or beekeeping can be taxed on its agricultural productivity instead of its market value, which often means a much lower bill.
Texas allows agricultural land to be valued for tax purposes based on what it produces, not what it would sell for on the open market. This can dramatically lower property taxes on farms and ranches. The county mainland has rice, hay, beef cattle, and dairy operations that may qualify.
To get this treatment, you apply through the Galveston County Appraisal District and must show the land is actively used for agriculture. If you later develop the land, rollback taxes going back three years can be owed. Check galvestoncad.org for what qualifies in Galveston County.
