Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill in Galveston County

If you own and live in your home, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces how much of your property value gets taxed.

Texas school districts must take at least $140,000 off your home's taxable value if you qualify. That alone can save you hundreds of dollars a year. You must own the home and use it as your main residence.

If you are 65 or older or have a qualifying disability, you get an extra $60,000 school exemption on top of the general one. Plus, your school taxes are frozen — they cannot go up as long as you stay in the home. Apply at Galveston Central Appraisal District (galvestoncad.org). Check the deadline there, as it changes.
