Galveston County Has Dozens of Special Tax Districts
Many newer neighborhoods in the county sit inside a Municipal Utility District or other special district that adds an extra layer of taxes to your bill.
Galveston County has at least 35 Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) plus drainage districts and other special districts. A MUD is a local government created to fund water, sewer, and sometimes roads in newer developments. You pay taxes to the MUD on top of county, city, and school taxes.
When buying a home, ask what special districts the property belongs to. This can add several hundred dollars or more to your yearly tax bill. The Galveston County Appraisal District lists all 72 taxing units in the county. Check galvestoncad.org for the specific districts on any parcel.
