Most Galveston County Homes Need a Separate Windstorm Policy

Private home insurance in Galveston County usually does not cover hurricane wind damage, so many owners must buy a separate policy from TWIA.

Texas created the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) in 1971 as a last resort for coastal homeowners. Galveston County is one of 14 first-tier coastal counties where TWIA coverage is available. If private insurers won't cover your home for wind and hail, TWIA can step in.

To qualify, you must show at least one private company denied you coverage. Your home must also be certified as built to the right building codes (usually with a WPI-8 form). If your home is in a V or VE coastal flood zone and was built or significantly altered after September 1, 2009, you are also required to carry separate flood insurance to get TWIA coverage. Check twia.org for current rates and eligibility rules.
