Agricultural Land Tax
Ag and Timber Valuations Can Cut Your Land Tax
Rural land in Walker County used for farming, ranching, or timber can be taxed on productivity value instead of market value.
Texas law lets qualifying rural land be appraised at productivity value — what the land can produce — rather than what it would sell for. This often results in a much lower tax bill. In Walker County, cattle, poultry, crops, and timber can all count as qualifying uses.
To qualify, the land must be used at a level typical for this area and managed in a businesslike way. Wildlife management and beekeeping can also qualify under certain rules. You apply through Walker CAD. Removing land from ag use can trigger a rollback tax — several years of back taxes plus interest. Check the WCAD website or the Texas Comptroller's page for current requirements before you apply.
