Property Tax Basics
How Property Taxes Work in Walker County
The Walker County Appraisal District sets your property value each year, and a separate tax office collects what you owe.
Two different offices handle your property taxes. The Walker County Appraisal District (WCAD) decides what your property is worth. Separate taxing entities — the county, school district, and city — then set rates and collect what you owe.
WCAD is required to appraise property at least every three years. In active markets it may reappraise every year. If you think your value is wrong, you can protest to the Appraisal Review Board. Tax bills typically go out around October 1. If you don't pay by January 31, penalty and interest start adding up on February 1. Check WCAD's website or call (936) 295-0402 for current details.
