Water Wells
Walker County Has a Groundwater Conservation District
Walker County is part of the Bluebonnet Groundwater Conservation District, which oversees well permits and protects local aquifer water.
Much of rural Walker County gets its water from the ground. The county sits within the Gulf Coast aquifer system, and parts of the county also draw from other aquifers in the region. People use groundwater for drinking water, livestock, and local water systems. It is a limited resource, so it has to be managed carefully.
Walker County is inside the Bluebonnet Groundwater Conservation District. That district covers Austin, Grimes, Walker, and Waller counties. If you want to drill a new water well, you may need a permit from the district first. The district tracks how much water is pumped each month and works to protect the supply. Before you drill, contact the district or check their website to learn the current rules.
