Septic System Rules for Unincorporated Walker County

If your rural Walker County property is not on a city sewer line, a septic system permit is almost always required before you can build.

Most homes in unincorporated Walker County handle their own sewage through a septic system. Texas calls this an on-site sewage facility, or OSSF. You need a permit to install, replace, or make major changes to one. The county issues these permits and inspects the work.

There is a narrow exception for single-family homes on 10 acres or more. To use it, every part of the system must stay at least 100 feet from the property line. Even then, a licensed professional must evaluate the site first. If you are buying rural land, ask about the septic permit history before you close the deal. The TCEQ homeowner page has a plain-language guide to all the rules.
