Birding
Galveston County Is a Major Spot for Migrating Birds
Galveston Island and the bay marshes are on major bird migration routes, attracting hundreds of species each spring and fall.
The Gulf Coast position of Galveston County makes it a well-known stop for migrating birds. The Upper Texas Coast is a critical stopover for neotropical migrants, shorebirds, raptors, and waterbirds. Thousands of birds concentrate along this stretch of coastline during spring and fall. Galveston Island State Park is one of the top spots, with four miles of trails through dune and marsh habitat that supports year-round and seasonal species.
Spring migration, roughly March through May, brings the biggest variety of songbirds. Fall brings shorebirds and waterfowl. No special permit is needed for birding on public land. Check tpwd.texas.gov for information on the state park and other public access areas along the coast.
