Prehistoric Rock Art Exists in Ector County

Blue Mountain pictographs in Ector County are ancient rock paintings left by prehistoric peoples, depicting hunting scenes.

Long before ranchers and railroad workers showed up, people lived and hunted across what is now Ector County. The Blue Mountain pictographs are prehistoric rock paintings. They show hunting scenes and other images. They are proof that cultures lived in this part of West Texas thousands of years ago.

Comanche hunters also used the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. The area had limited water, so it was not the center of their range. Still, they moved through and hunted here. The Texas Almanac notes these prehistoric and indigenous ties to the county's land.
