Bois d'Arc Lake Is Texas's Newest Major Reservoir

Bois d'Arc Lake opened to the public in April 2024 and sits northeast of Bonham — it is the first major new reservoir built in Texas in more than 30 years.

The North Texas Municipal Water District built Bois d'Arc Lake to supply drinking water to the DFW region. The lake covers about 26 square miles in Fannin County. It opened for public recreation in April 2024.

Texas Parks and Wildlife stocked the lake with over 373,000 Florida Largemouth Bass, including fish bred from trophy-size stock. There is a 16-inch maximum length limit on bass to help the fishery grow. Three free public boat ramps are open around the clock. Waterfowl hunting is allowed in designated areas on the lake surface. A Texas fishing license is required.
