The Bolivar Ferry Connects Galveston to the Bolivar Peninsula for Free

The Galveston-Bolivar ferry is a free, state-operated car ferry that crosses Galveston Bay and is also an evacuation route during storms.

The Texas Department of Transportation operates the ferry between Galveston Island and Port Bolivar. It runs 24 hours a day and is free to use. The ferry is the main way to reach the Bolivar Peninsula from the island side without a long drive around the bay.

During hurricanes, the ferry typically closes well before a storm arrives, which cuts off one escape route. If you live on the Bolivar Peninsula, know your evacuation timing. The ferry also attracts bottlenose dolphins, which often swim alongside the boats. Check txdot.gov or call 409-795-2230 for current schedules and wait times.
