German Immigrants Shaped Brenham's Culture and Festivals
German immigration to Brenham peaked in the early 1880s. Settlers left a lasting mark on the town's churches, schools, and festivals.
The railroad reached Brenham in 1860. That made it a regional hub. German immigration grew through the early 1880s. Settlers brought new crops and new traditions. They founded their own churches and held community events rooted in German Volksfests.
The Maifest festival grew from those early German events. It began in 1881. Brenham also has a long Juneteenth tradition. Celebrations there go back to the late 1870s. Both traditions show the county's layered history. European settlers and African American communities both shaped the area after emancipation.
