Homestead Exemption

File Your Homestead Exemption Before May 1

Washington County homeowners can lower their property tax bill by filing a homestead exemption, but the deadline is April 30.

If you own and live in your home as your main residence, you likely qualify for the general homestead exemption. You file the application with the Washington County Appraisal District. The window opens January 1 and closes April 30 each year.

If you are 65 or older or have a qualifying disability, you can get an extra exemption on top of the general one. Seniors also get a tax ceiling, meaning your school and county taxes cannot go above a set amount. Late applications may be accepted up to two years after the delinquency date. Contact the appraisal district at (979) 277-3740 or visit washingtoncad.org.
