Hamilton County Courthouse and Its History

The Hamilton County Courthouse was built in 1887. It blends three architectural styles and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Hamilton County Courthouse sits in downtown Hamilton. It was built in 1887. A second phase of work came in 1932. The building blends three styles: Richardsonian Romanesque, Neoclassical, and Spanish Revival.

The Romanesque part has square turrets with notched, castle-like tops. It also has round arch windows. The stone is local limestone. The corners have hand-scribed detailing.

The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It also carries a State Antiquities Landmark designation and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker. Those are three separate honors.

The Texas Historical Commission runs a program that helps restore old courthouses across Texas. More details are at thc.texas.gov.
