Septic Permits for Rural Property in Hamilton County

Most rural properties in Hamilton County are not on a public sewer, so a permitted septic system is required before you can build or sell.

Texas calls septic systems On-Site Sewage Facilities, or OSSFs. You need a permit to install, repair, or expand one. Many Texas counties run their own OSSF program as an authorized agent of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). If Hamilton County has that status, you deal with the county — not the state — for your permit. Contact Hamilton County directly or use the TCEQ county search tool to confirm who issues permits in this area.

If you are buying rural land, ask whether the existing system has a valid permit and whether it will transfer to you. Transferring an OSSF permit is not automatic. For questions about a new system or an existing one, contact Hamilton County directly. TCEQ's general OSSF information is at tceq.texas.gov/permitting/ossf.
