Homestead Exemption in Hamilton County

If Hamilton County is your main home, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.

A homestead exemption lowers the value used to figure your property tax. The lower the value, the less you owe. To qualify, the home must be your main residence.

You apply through the Hamilton Central Appraisal District (CAD) — the office that sets your property value. You do not apply through a tax office or the state.

Texas law sets the filing deadline at April 30 for new applications. Check with the CAD to confirm the current deadline. Rules can change from one legislative session to the next.

You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID. The address on the ID must match the property address. Download the application form at hamiltoncad.org.
