Flood Risk

Much of Galveston County Is in a High-Risk Flood Zone

Galveston County has updated federal flood maps, and many properties — especially on the island — are in zones that require flood insurance.

FEMA sets flood zone maps that show how likely each area is to flood. Zones labeled V, VE, or A have the highest risk. Lenders usually require flood insurance if your home is in one of these zones and you have a federally backed mortgage.

Galveston Island and low-lying mainland areas face real storm surge and heavy rain risk. You can look up any address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center at msc.fema.gov. The county also keeps local flood map resources through its engineering office. Even if flood insurance is not required, it may be worth buying in this county.
