Flood Risk

The Sabine River and its forks flood parts of Hunt County

Most of Hunt County drains into the Sabine River basin, and bottomlands along those waterways carry flood risk that FEMA maps track.

Hunt County's main waterways include the South Fork Sabine River, Cowleech Fork Sabine River, South Sulphur River, and Middle Sulphur River. Low areas along these streams appear on FEMA flood maps as Special Flood Hazard Areas. FEMA updated Hunt County flood maps as recently as 2010.

If you are buying or building near any of these waterways, check the FEMA Flood Map Service Center (msc.fema.gov) with the property address. Lenders usually require flood insurance for homes in high-risk zones. Even properties outside mapped zones can flood, so the Texas Flood Information Viewer is also worth checking.
