County History
Galveston County Was Established in 1838 Under the Texas Republic
Galveston County is one of Texas's oldest counties, organized in 1839, with deep roots in trade, piracy, and early American settlement on the Gulf Coast.
American colonists first settled on the island in 1827. The area went through a period of pirate and privateer activity before becoming part of Mexican Texas. Galveston County was formally created in 1838 under the Republic of Texas and organized in 1839. The county seat, Galveston, developed as a major deepwater port.
Historically, Galveston was a hub for shipping cotton, sugar, and other goods. Its port was described as the oldest deepwater port west of New Orleans. By the late 1800s it was one of the most important cities in Texas. That history is documented in the TSHA Handbook of Texas at tshaonline.org.
