Galveston County's Economy Mixes Petrochemicals, Port Trade, and Tourism
Galveston County's economy is built on five main pillars — port trade, oil and petrochemicals, medical services, financial services, and tourism — that have defined the county since the mid-twentieth century.
Texas City, on the mainland, is home to major petrochemical plants. The Port of Galveston handles shipping and cruise ships. The county also has a large medical sector. The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston is a big part of that. Tourism on the island is another major piece of the economy.
The mix of industries means the county feels different depending on where you are. League City and Dickinson are suburban. Galveston Island is part beach town, part industrial port. The TSHA Handbook of Texas covers the county's economic history at tshaonline.org.
