Water Supply
Most of Galveston County Uses Public Water, Not Private Wells
Galveston Island and most developed areas use treated public water. Private wells are limited and often poor quality because of saltwater in the ground.
The coastal land in Galveston County makes private wells hard to use. Salt water from the Gulf and the bay seeps into the groundwater. This is called saltwater intrusion. The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) reports higher salt levels along the Gulf Coast from pumping and natural water flows. Most residents get their water from a city system or a MUD (Municipal Utility District) water supply.
If you are buying rural land on the mainland and plan to drill a well, check first. Contact the county and the TWDB before you buy. The TWDB has historical groundwater studies and current well records for the area. Visit twdb.texas.gov for groundwater data and well records.
