Private Wells

Private water wells follow state rules in Hunt County

Rural property in Hunt County may not be served by a public water system, making private wells a common water source governed by Texas groundwater rules.

Texas groundwater is managed locally through Groundwater Conservation Districts (GCDs). If your land is not within a GCD, Texas applies the rule of capture — you own the water you pump from under your land, but so do your neighbors. Check with TWDB to see if your parcel falls inside a GCD.

Before buying rural land in Hunt County, confirm whether public water service is available or whether you will rely on a private well. A water test is advisable at any well purchase. TCEQ and TWDB both publish guidance on Texas groundwater rules.
