Water Supply

Canyon Lake Is the County's Main Surface Water Source

The Guadalupe River basin — including Canyon Lake — provides the main surface water supply for the county and surrounding region.

The Guadalupe River starts in Kerr County in the Hill Country. It is fed by the Comal, Blanco, and San Marcos rivers. Five major reservoirs sit in the basin, including Canyon Lake, which is a key surface water supply source for communities along the upper basin.

Pumping too much water from underground aquifers is a concern here. Over time, heavy pumping has reduced the natural flow of the river. Total water demand in Guadalupe County is expected to grow from about 34,000 acre-feet per year in 2020 to roughly 61,000 by 2070. That growth is driven by rising population.
