Hunting

Refugio County sits in TPWD's South Zone for deer and dove hunting

Hunters in Refugio County follow South Zone rules for white-tailed deer, dove, and turkey, with specific bag limits set by TPWD each year.

Refugio County is in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department South Zone. That zone has its own season dates and bag limits for deer, dove, turkey, and other game. For the 2025-2026 season, the white-tailed deer bag limit is 5 deer, no more than 3 bucks. The dove daily bag limit is 15 white-winged, mourning, and white-tipped doves in the aggregate, with no more than 2 white-tipped doves. Turkey season allows up to 4 birds, gobblers or bearded hens.

Most of the land in Refugio County is private. Hunters typically need a landowner's permission or a private lease to hunt here. Migratory birds like dove and duck require a federal duck stamp and HIP certification in addition to a Texas hunting license. Turkey harvest must be reported through the TPWD mobile app or website. Always check TPWD's Outdoor Annual for the current season dates before you go out, as dates and limits can change.
