Low-Water Crossings: Turn Around, Don't Drown
Rural roads in Guadalupe County cross streams at low points that can flood quickly and become deadly.
Many FM roads and county roads cross creeks at low-water crossings. These are spots with no bridge where the road dips down to stream level. When it rains hard, these spots fill up fast. Six inches of moving water can sweep away a car.
Texas law says you cannot drive around a barrier blocking a flooded low-water crossing. The fine is up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail. Always check real-time road conditions at drivetexas.org before heading out after heavy rain. If you see a barrier, turn around.
