Who handles property taxes in Culberson County

The Culberson County Appraisal District sets property values, while a separate tax office collects what you owe.

Two different offices handle property taxes here. The Culberson County Appraisal District decides what your property is worth. That value sets the size of your tax bill. If you think the value is wrong, you can protest it with the appraisal district.

A separate office — the Tax Assessor-Collector — sends your bill and collects your payment. Several taxing units share that bill. They include Culberson County itself, the City of Van Horn, the Culberson-Allamore Independent School District, a hospital district, and the Culberson County Groundwater Conservation District. Each unit sets its own tax rate.

You may qualify for a homestead exemption on your main home. This lowers the taxable value and reduces what you owe. Check the appraisal district website for current tax rates and exemption forms.
