Wildfire Hazard
Wildfire is a real risk in Culberson County
Dry conditions and strong winds make wildfires a recurring threat in Far West Texas, including Culberson County.
Far West Texas, including Culberson County, sees frequent wildfire danger. The region is dry most of the year. When winds pick up and humidity drops, a small fire can spread fast across open rangeland. The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has issued repeated warnings about elevated fire conditions in this part of the state.
If you own or are buying property here, ask about fire risk before you build or buy. Metal roofing and cleared brush around structures help reduce risk. Burn bans can be issued by the county judge and change often — check with the county before burning debris. The TDEM website has preparedness resources for wildfire. Flash flooding from desert storms is also a risk in low-lying areas.
