Tax Protest
You Can Challenge Your Property Value in Galveston County Each Year
If you think the Galveston County Appraisal District valued your property too high, you have the right to protest — and many homeowners do.
Every year, GCAD mails notices of appraised value. If you think the value is too high, you can file a protest with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). The ARB is an independent panel that hears disputes. You do not need a lawyer to protest — many people handle it themselves with comparable sales data.
There is a deadline to file each year, usually around May 15, but check your notice for the exact date. You can protest online, by mail, or in person. If you disagree with the ARB's decision, you can take the case to court. Start at galvestoncad.org for forms and the current protest deadline.
