Public Hunting Access in Walker County

Hunters in Walker County can access tens of thousands of public acres through the Sam Houston National Forest WMA, but a Texas hunting license and TPWD annual public hunting permit are required.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages public hunting on the Sam Houston National Forest WMA, which includes about 54,153 acres in Walker County. Legal game includes white-tailed deer, feral hog, squirrel, dove, waterfowl, quail, rabbits, and predators. Deer season dates and bag limits change each year — always check the current TPWD Outdoor Annual for Walker County rules.

Huntsville State Park also holds limited drawn deer hunts each fall. Hunters must apply through TPWD's public hunting draw. Spaces are limited and dates vary each season. Check the TPWD drawn hunts page well before season opens.
