Sam Houston Lived and Died in Huntsville

Huntsville was Sam Houston's home for much of his later life, and the city preserves several of his historic residences on an 18-acre museum campus.

Sam Houston — president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. senator, and Texas governor — made Huntsville his home. He died there in 1863. The Sam Houston Memorial Museum on the Sam Houston State University campus is an 18-acre site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes original and historic structures: his home, a log-cabin law office, and the Steamboat House, where Houston died after being removed as governor for refusing to support the Confederacy.

The museum was formally dedicated on May 3, 1929 and is managed by Sam Houston State University. Multiple original pieces of Houston's furniture are on display. It is one of the few places in Texas where you can walk through a room that was genuinely part of a major figure's life. Check the museum's official site for current hours and admission fees.
