Sam Houston National Forest Covers Much of Walker County

Sam Houston National Forest spans 163,000 acres across three counties, with a large share in Walker County, offering trails, camping, and public hunting.

The forest covers parts of Walker, Montgomery, and San Jacinto counties. In Walker County alone, TPWD designates over 54,000 acres as a Wildlife Management Area open to public hunting. Game includes white-tailed deer, feral hog, waterfowl, dove, squirrel, and more. A valid Texas hunting license is required. Some trail use — such as ATVs and horses — also requires a permit from the U.S. Forest Service.

The forest has 85 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus the 129-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail for foot traffic only. Three developed campgrounds serve the forest (Cagle, Double Lake, and Stubblefield). Primitive camping off the Lone Star Trail is generally allowed outside of deer season. Contact the Sam Houston Ranger District at (936) 344-6205 for current conditions.
