Senior Tax Freeze

Homeowners 65 and Older Can Freeze Their School Tax in Galveston County

Once you turn 65, you can freeze the school district portion of your property tax so it cannot increase as long as you live in your home.

Texas law gives homeowners who are 65 or older a school tax ceiling — sometimes called a tax freeze. Once you apply and qualify, your school district taxes cannot go above the amount you paid in the year you first qualified. This protection stays in place even if your home value goes up.

You qualify starting January 1 of the year you turn 65, or when you buy a home after turning 65. The freeze applies only to school taxes, not county or city taxes. Apply at the Galveston County Appraisal District. Call 409-935-1980 or visit galvestoncad.org/homestead/ to apply.
