Septic systems outside city limits need a permit

Any new or replaced on-site sewage system in unincorporated Hunt County requires a permit before installation.

Texas calls home septic systems On-Site Sewage Facilities (OSSFs). Most of rural Hunt County has no public sewer. If you are in one of those areas, you must get a permit before you install or replace a system. A local office handles most permits. TCEQ steps in only where no local office exists.

Use a licensed installer. Have the system inspected when work is done. TCEQ says to pump the tank every three to five years. If you are buying rural land in Hunt County, ask if the septic system has a valid permit. Ask when it was last pumped.
