Septic Systems in Titus County

Much of Titus County is rural with no sewer hookups, so many homes use septic systems regulated under state and local rules.

In Texas, septic systems are called On-Site Sewage Facilities, or OSSFs. The state agency that sets the rules is the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Titus County has its own local OSSF order that TCEQ has approved. That means the county can set rules that are stricter than the state minimum.

You must get a permit before you install, repair, or expand a septic system. A licensed site evaluator must look at your land first. If you buy rural property in Titus County, ask whether the existing system has a valid permit and was put in legally.

Check the TCEQ website for current state rules. Contact Titus County's environmental office for local requirements. The official sources listed here are a good starting point.
