Most Rural Lots in Fannin County Need a Septic System Permit

Homes outside city limits in Fannin County use on-site septic systems, and Texas law requires a permit before you install or repair one.

In Texas, a septic system is called an On-Site Sewage Facility, or OSSF. If your property is not connected to a city sewer line, you need one. A permit is required before installation in most cases. The local permitting authority — either the county or a designated body — must approve the system.

TCEQ sets the statewide rules under 30 TAC Chapter 285. Local authorities may have additional rules. If you are buying a rural home or raw land, find out whether an OSSF exists and whether it has been permitted. A bad or unpermitted system can be costly to fix and can affect a sale. Check with Fannin County or TCEQ for who handles permits in your specific area.
