Two Rivers Drain Walker County

The Trinity River runs along Walker County's northern edge and the San Jacinto River along the south, both draining toward the Gulf Coast.

Walker County sits between two major river systems. The Trinity River runs along the northern edge of the county. In the 1800s it was a working waterway — flatboats and steamboats hauled cotton and timber along it. The San Jacinto River drains the southern part of the county. The area gets about 46 to 49 inches of rain a year, which feeds both rivers.

Low land near these rivers can flood after heavy rain. If you are buying property close to either river or their smaller branches, look up the flood zone before you close. The FEMA Flood Map Service Center has the official maps. A property in a high-risk flood zone — usually labeled Zone A or AE — may require flood insurance if your mortgage is federally backed.
