Galveston County Vehicles Need an Emissions Check Before Registration

As of January 2025, non-commercial vehicles in Texas no longer need a safety inspection. Galveston County still requires an emissions test because it is in the Houston metro emissions area.

Texas combined the inspection and registration steps into one. You take your car to a state-certified inspection station. After it passes, your registration updates on its own. You do not need a second stop at the county tax office. Galveston County is part of the Houston metro area. That puts it in an emissions testing zone.

As of January 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need a safety inspection to register. But Galveston County still requires an OBD emissions check. OBD stands for onboard diagnostic. It is a quick scan of your car's computer. Older vehicles and diesel vehicles follow different rules. Your renewal notice tells you what you need. Go to txdmv.gov or the DPS station locator (dps.texas.gov) to find an inspector near you.
