Wildfire Hazard
Wildfire Risk Is High in Ector County
Dry conditions, sparse vegetation, and West Texas winds make wildfires a serious hazard for homeowners in Ector County.
Ector County gets very little rain. Yearly rainfall averages around 13–14 inches. Summers are hot, often pushing into the mid-90s. Wind is common. These conditions let grassfires spread fast. Dry winters and early spring are the most dangerous times.
County officials can issue burn bans when the risk is high. Before you burn any debris, check with Ector County or the Texas A&M Forest Service to see if a burn ban is in place. If you own a home in a rural area or on the edge of Odessa, clear dry brush away from your buildings. Also check your homeowner's insurance to make sure it covers wildfire damage.
